Wanyama was one of the signings of the summer

This was, of course, clear long before now, but the Nigerian’s performance on Sunday served as a reminder of just how important he is to the side.

Playing in a position which could be easily overlooked in a free-scoring side like Spurs, where midfielders and defenders regularly contribute to goalscoring, Victor Wanyama has stood out as the clear improvement made to the Tottenham squad last summer.

Particularly in the first half at the KCOM stadium, Wanyama strolled around central midfield, tackling, intercepting and distributing possession excellently. His work and partnership with Eric Dier meant that Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld spent much of the match as spectators.

In the second half, the 25-year-old added a goal and an assist, giving himself a tally of four this season, proving that even from a deeper, controlling role, he can contribute directly to the side’s attack.
