Harry Kane comments on Tottenham’s Premier League title hopes

Harry Kane has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur cannot be ruled out of the Premier League title race at this stage of the season, despite their poor start to the campaign, in comments reported by Sky Sports.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are already 10 points behind league leaders Liverpool. They have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions, and have squandered leads in three of those fixtures.

The pressure looks to really be on heading into this weekend’s clash with Southampton – particularly after their Carabao Cup exit on Tuesday. But Kane suggested that Spurs still believe that they cannot be ruled out of the title race yet.

“If this was January or February people would be saying there’s no chance of us winning it,” he told Sky Sports.

“Obviously it’s not the ideal start, but stranger things have happened. You can never rule yourselves out until it’s done.”

TBR’s View

Kane is surely right to suggest that it is too soon to rule Tottenham out. Manchester City came from seven points behind in January to catch Liverpool last season.

Of course, they are massive underdogs. Their form needs to turn around dramatically in the very near future. And it is currently difficult to imagine Liverpool dropping any points anytime soon.

But few gave Spurs a chance of reaching the Champions League knockout stages when they took one point from their opening three games last season. And even fewer thought Tottenham had a chance of overturning a 2-0 deficit at half-time of the second-leg of their semi-final tie with Ajax in the same competition.

Spurs have defied the odds before. Kane believes that they can do it again.
