Hargreaves says Gianni Vio is working some magic at Tottenham
Owen Hargreaves has told BT Sport (broadcast on 13/9; 18:58) that Gianni Vio is clearly working some magic at Tottenham Hotspur after watching Antonio Conte’s men enjoy some real success with their set-pieces during their Champions League clash with Sporting on Tuesday.
Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the season last night. Two late goals gave Ruben Amorim’s men the three points and ensured that it was the Portuguese side who put one foot in the knockout stages of the competition.
Spurs were extremely disappointing. It seemed as though no player got more sightings of goal than right wing-back Emerson Royal.
They created openings. However, when the crucial moment came, they either fluffed their lines or failed to make the right pass. But they did threaten to enjoy some real joy from set-pieces.
Tottenham appointed Vio in the summer as their set-piece coach. And after watching Kane get on the end of one free-kick following a run from one side to the other, Hargreaves suggested that he can see how the Italian is having a real impact.
“I tell you what, that set-piece coach is working some magic. It’s a great little run from Harry Kane, went all the way across the width of the box,” he told BT Sport.
“I think he said he had 3000 different variations. Not sure he’s got that many, but we’ve seen a few tonight.”

Tottenham are certainly threatening to cause problems from set-pieces. But actually, they have not yet been too prolific from dead ball situations this term.
Goals against Chelsea and Wolves came from corners.
Having said that, teams will clearly be concerned about defending against Spurs at set-pieces. They are working on these clever routines. And clearly, if you switch off, you could be punished.
It did not work on Tuesday. But there are likely to be plenty of occasions over the season where Vio’s influence is going to pay off.
