Hargeaves explains what Tottenham fans can expect from their side under Ryan Mason

Owen Hargreaves has told Optus Sport’s Analysis Show that Tottenham Hotspur supporters can expect a more attacking side under the guidance of Ryan Mason – one that plays with more freedom ahead of Wednesday’s clash against Southampton.

Spurs are set to play their first match since Jose Mourinho was sacked on Monday morning – with the Portuguese boss failing to deliver Tottenham into the top four of the Premier League. Combining that with the Europa League exit, Mourinho had to go.

The timing is questionable with the Carabao Cup final on Sunday but had Mourinho won against Manchester City, it would have been impossible to sack him. In recent matches against Manchester United and Everton, he has looked blank.

Mason has since taken interim charge and Hargreaves has predicted what Spurs fans can expect from their Tottenham side under the guidance of the 29-year-old ex-midfielder. He reckons Spurs will be more attacking, and will play with more freedom.

“They have a young manager in Ryan Mason – he is probably going to put the best players on the pitch and tell the players, go and play to your strengths,” Hargreaves told Matt Holland on Optus Sport’s Analysis Show.

“They have some great players at the top of the pitch but defensively I think they will struggle against Manchester City. They can score and make it interesting, and play with a freedom that has not been seen in a while.”

TBR’s view – Can Mason take Tottenham into the top four?

If he is going to do so, he will need Harry Kane to be fit – but the England skipper is expected to miss Wednesday’s match against Southampton and remains a doubt for Sunday’s cup final. But the top four remains a possibility.

With six games to play, there are five points separating Spurs and West Ham. If Mason is to guide his side into the top four, he will need to take maximum points in the remaining league games – perhaps allowing for one slip up.

Anything less than five wins and Tottenham will fail. There is a chance, but a slim one.
