'Had a contest': Marsch says 25-year-old had the longest throw in Leeds training, could be 'dangerous'

We saw Raphinha’s long throw in Leeds United’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Monday and Jesse Marsch was asked about it at his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with Manchester City.

Raphinha is more associated with tricky dribbles and dangerous shots having cut in from the right but the 25-year-old seemingly has another string to his bow.

Marsch said that the Leeds squad had a long throw competition in training and the Brazilian wideman came out on top and suggested it is something he will look to use more in the closing weeks of the season.

When asked at the press conference how it came about, Leeds boss Marsch said: “We had a contest in training, because I asked the team if anyone had a long throw.

“I’ve done this before and they all said no! And I said someone in here does. I said my money’s on Raphinha and he did).

“It was dangerous and will use probably it more in the future. We don’t have a throw-in coach like Liverpool, or some other places but we will try to see if we can be dangerous in those moments.”

Leeds need every weapon they have at their disposal in order to beat a City side who were involved in an epic Champions League battle with Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men carved through their hosts at times, and they did not need to sustain long periods of pressure in order to do it.

Leeds of course do not have the same quality all over the pitch but Raphinha is capable of changing a game on his own and the long throw is another route to goal.

There may be some tiredness in the City ranks after their European match and Leeds need to try and exploit that, especially as one of the fittest teams in the Premier League.
