A number of West Ham United fans have taken to Twitter to bemoan Goncalo Cardoso’s departure from the London Stadium.

The 20-year-old has joined Basel on an 18-month loan deal, the Swiss club confirming they have an option to buy.

West Ham signed Cardoso from Portuguese club Boavista in the summer of 2019 for around £2.5million.

According to football.london, the Hammers saw off competition from the likes of Benfica, Lazio and Inter Milan for the defender.

However, Cardoso hasn’t made a single senior appearance for West Ham, playing exclusively for the Under-23s.

The Portugal youth international has featured eight times for the development squad so far this campaign, having made 16 appearances last season.

And since David Moyes replaced Manuel Pellegrini in December last year, Cardoso has fallen further down the pecking order.

After West Ham announced the move, some fans weren’t impressed with how another seemingly talented youngster has now left without being given a chance:

Basel currently sit fourth in the Swiss Super League, nine points behind leaders Young Boys.
