3) Per Mertesacker still has life in him
The ‘Big Friendly German’ made his first start of the season in the FA Cup final in what was a shock team selection a week after he made his return to action after spending the whole season on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
Mertesacker, alongside goalkeeper David Ospina, were not expected to start, but the centre-back produced one of his best ever display in the red and white of his side as he produced a number of crucial tackles, blocks and interceptions to prevent Chelsea from bringing themselves back into the game on the counter attack as the Gunners’ attackers missed chance after chance to extend their lead.
With a young Rob Holding and a converted full-back in Nacho Monreal as his partners in a back three, Mertesacker’s leadership was crucial to keep the defence calm and organised and showed just how important he can be. Whilst he may be losing the very little pace that he did have, the German is showing the value that he can have for Arsene Wenger’s side.
