Arsenal’s season wasn’t a complete failure, luckily for Arsene Wenger
Having missed out on the top four for the first time in 20 years, a piece of silverware was the only way to salvage the 2016/17 season for Arsenal, and even more so for manager Arsene Wenger. Whilst that is still not quite up to expectations, claims that the club is in crisis seem laughable given that they have won the country’s biggest cup competition in three of the last four years.
The Frenchman revealed that an announcement can be expected next week on his future, with it still unsure if he will extend his stay at the Emirates or move on after over two decades, but if he is to go, he will do so in some style after this impressive underdog victory over the league champions.
It was also crucial for Wenger that the win came in this way. Wenger outsmarted his counterpart Antonio Conte, with his matching of formations providing the Italian with a headache. The Gunners nullified the threat of the Blues and caused them problems of their own, with the north London side running out clear winners by the end of the evening, reacting in the perfect way when Chelsea did pull one back.
