Guillem Balague’s mass praise justified as Tottenham Hotspur get the job done in Barcelona

Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 and qualified for the next round of the Champions League.

Not many people are better placed to put Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with Barcelona into context then Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague. He has seen a number of teams from abroad come to the Nou Camp over the years and be put to the sword.

Tonight, Tottenham earned a 1-1 draw against an admittedly rotated Barcelona side. But Balague was still effusive in his praise.

Tottenham did put in a fantastic display tonight. One lone mistake from the nervous youngster Kyle Walker-Peters aside and Tottenham were near faultless. Even when Barca got serious, and pulled Lionel Messi from the bench, Tottenham did not waiver.

Going forward they were magnificent. Some of the one-touch play between Harry Winks, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Harry Kane was a joy to watch. Walker-Peters, after his early lapse, performed well, as did Danny Rose, in stretching the Barcelona team throughout the game. When Moussa Sissoko headed out to wing-back, he was again magnificent.

The fact is, Jasper Cillessen was Barcelona’s man-of-the-match. If the Dutch keeper was not in such impressive form, Tottenham would have surely inflicted a rare home defeat on Barcelona.

Of course, this was not Barcelona at full tilt. Tottenham however still played a wonderful brand of football that deserved to put them through into the last 16.

If they can play like this going forward in the competition, the lethargy of their first three games in the group stage could be long forgotten.
