Guillem Balague has claimed on his official Youtube Channel that Newcastle United’s potential new owners could sign Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez on loan this summer – as well as freebie Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain.
Rodriguez, 28, is expected to leave Real Madrid this summer and has been linked with numerous Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Everton and even Wolverhampton Wanderers. He has been used just 13 times by Zinedine Zidane, this term.
With the Colombian set to enter the final 12 months of his contract, Rodriguez is likely to be sold with Real Madrid looking to raise funds in order to cope with the global health crisis. But Newcastle will be limited to Financial Fairplay rules.
According to Caracol, Newcastle are interested in Rodriguez and Balague stated that Newcastle could look to sign Rodriguez on loan – a move that Real Madrid would accept if they paid the majority of his wages, and would comply with FFP.
Balague also reckons a free transfer for Cavani could be on the cards in the coming months, with ESPN claiming the Toon’s soon-to-be owners have contacted the PSG striker’s agent – with the striker out of contract this summer.
“There are other players like (Edinson) Cavani, finishing contract, James (Rodriguez), who Real Madrid want to get rid of, that they may be able to convince,” Balague said. “They will have to be clever about how they use that money.
“They could get James on loan, Real Madrid would be happy to do so if they paid most of his wages. Cavani, if you get someone like that then you’re talking serious business. Not massive financially for the reasons I’ve told you, Financial Fair Play.”
TBR’s view – James and Cavani can take Newcastle to Europe
A striker is a priority and bringing in a replacement for Joelinton is absolutely crucial. Cavani, on a free transfer, would be an excellent addition given he would not impact financial fairplay rules as much as buying a striker.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez could help form a stunning front four. In a 4-2-3-1 system, Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron could combine on the wings with Rodriguez in the 10 role and Cavani up front. That could take Newcastle into the top six.
