Erling Haaland stole the headlines as Manchester City beat Manchester United on Sunday, but new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also played a key part in the derby victory.

Phil Foden put City ahead in the first half, before Haaland made it two shortly after half-time. United were poor throughout, but could have found a foothold back into the game on the hour mark when summer signing Bryan Mbeumo lined up an acrobatic volley towards the bottom corner.

With the ball destined for the back of the net, City debutant Gianluigi Donnarumma dived low to his right to push the ball around the post and keep their clean sheet intact.

Guglielmo Vicario praises Gianluigi Donnarumma debut for Manchester City with new nickname

Making his City debut after his £26m deadline day signing from Paris Saint-Germain, Donnarumma made two saves from two United shots on target.

Donnarumma also made six recoveries, three clearances and found a teammate with 17 of his 30 attempted passes, earning praise for his performance.

Taking to social media after the game, Donnarumma posted: “Manchester is [blue]” inserting a sky blue emoji in place of the word ‘blue’.

And among the replies was Italy teammate and Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who said: “Bravo bufalo”, with emojis of a buffalo, hands raised and an Italian flag.

Gary Neville says ‘that’s why’ Manchester City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma after sensational save vs Manchester United

As Donnarumma pushed Bryan Mbeumo’s acrobatic effort around the post, former Manchester United captain Gary Neville praised the new goalkeeper on Sky Sports commentary.

Neville said: ‘We’re right behind that, you think it’s [going] in. That’s why they’ve signed him.”

After the game, Pep Guardiola said: “He played really good. You know in the corners, it’s dangerous and especially in the save and everyone remember him.

“I like the save and after the reaction from Josko [Gvardiol], from Ruben [Dias], from Rodri, going [to him]… But we know we brought a player with incredible experience.”
