‘Great future ahead’, ‘big things coming’: Some Newcastle fans erupt as 6ft 3in prodigy pens new deal

A number of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to congratulate Magpies academy defender Oisin McEntee signing a new contract at St James’ Park.

The 19-year-old defender was one of several teenagers drafted into the regular Newcastle reserve side after a host of players were sent out on loan earlier this season.

McEntee’s rise continued when, in February, he was called up to first-team training in wake of Ciaran Clark’s ankle injury and took on the likes of Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin in drills.

On Friday, the 6ft 3in centre-back was one of three Magpies youngsters who penned professional contract extensions, along with fellow defender Ryan Barrett and midfielder Jack Young.

McEntee took to Twitter with a message for the Toon Army, and plenty congratulated him and tipped him for success in the black and white stripes:

McEntee was plucked from Gaelic football after being spotted by Manchester United before the Magpies signed him in 2017, as reported by Chronicle Live.

He captained Newcastle’s Under-18 squad before stepping up to the Under-23s, and scored on his debut for United’s second-string in a 4-2 victory against West Bromwich Albion (nufc.co.uk).
