With Albian Ajeti reportedly on the brink of a move to Celtic, Beni Huggel has tipped the 23-year-old to be a success at Parkhead and a Bhoys fan favourite (Herald Scotland).

The Hoops have been linked with the West Ham striker for a number of weeks as they look to bolster their attacking options for a crucial 2020-21 season.

Celtic and West Ham were reported to have agreed a loan deal with an option to make the move permanent for a fee of around £5million following initial talks last month.

The prospective switch appeared to have been put on hold at the start of the month after the Switzerland international asked for more time to consider his options.

However, Sky Sports have now reported that Ajeti has passed a medical at Celtic, with the Hoops looking to sign the player on a permanent deal instead of just on loan.

Huggel was a player at Basel when Ajeti was coming through the youth ranks there and he immediately recognised a special talent.

“Albian is a skilful guy,” he told Herald Scotland. “He has a lot of determination and a good mindset.

“He always wants to win, always wants to get the most he can out of a game. He is also good technically and can shoot with both feet. He isn’t the tallest striker, just six foot or so. But he is a good header of the ball.

“He plays with a lot of emotion. When he was at Basel the fans loved him because he always gave the impression of giving everything that he had for the team. He had a great attitude. I think the Celtic supporters will like him.”

Ajeti may not have pulled up many trees in London following his £8million switch from Basel last year, but his form with the Swiss club was very impressive.

In 96 competitive appearances, he registered 43 goals and 21 assists, helping his club to three league titles and a Swiss cup, and has featured in European matches.

It’s crucial for Celtic to bolster their attacking ranks as soon as possible and it looks as though Ajeti could turn out to be an inspired signing for the Hoops, judging by Huggel’s comments.
