Grealish buzzing for Miguel Almiron after comments on Newcastle man
Jack Grealish has told The Telegraph that he is buzzing to see how well Miguel Almiron is playing this season, admitting that he deserves all of the criticism he has got from Newcastle United fans.
Grealish was slated at the end of last season after making a cruel comment about the Paraguayan while Manchester City celebrated winning the Premier League title.
The Englishman had had a few drinks and was later filmed making a comparison with Almiron to outline how poor Riyad Mahrez had been on the final day of the campaign.
Almiron had had a difficult time in the Premier League during his first few years on Tyneside. So it was certainly out of order for Grealish to mock the attacking midfielder.
But there is no question that Almiron has responded in the most remarkable why. The 28-year-old has scored eight goals in 15 games for Eddie Howe’s men. That helped the side go into the World Cup break inside the top-four.
Grealish buzzing for Almiron
Almiron is surely the most improved player in the league this season. And Grealish has held his hands up and apologised for making the comments.
He suggested that he is really happy to see Almiron shut him up emphatically.
“I regret that. I swear, I’m actually buzzing the way he’s reacted. He said something about me in an interview the other day, he wished me the best. I thought ‘what a guy, man’,” he told The Telegraph.
“I messaged Matt Targett because I’m close with him from Villa and I said to him ‘can you message him for me and say to him that I apologise, I obviously didn’t mean it’. When I look back on that, that was just one thing that was stupid of me to say. I shouldn’t have said it.”
Grealish could have perhaps publicly addressed the comments sooner. But you have to give him credit for being very honest and making an effort to apologise.
Grealish definitely has his faults and will probably never be a player who unites all football fans. But he really comes across as a very genuine person. And with that, you can imagine that he has really beaten himself up for what he said about Almiron.
And actually, seeing Almiron respond so well has probably made it easier for Grealish to move on as it has been the Manchester City man who has subsequently been ridiculed since the comments were made – rather than Almiron.
