Nicolas Pepe has apologised on Instagram after he was sent off for a headbutt during Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Leeds United on Sunday afternoon – and Granit Xhaka has responded to his post, backing the Gunners winger.
Pepe, 25, was handed a rare Premier League start along with Joe Willock on Sunday after impressing in the Europa League. The Ivorian, though, threw his chance in the gutter when he was sent off for headbutting Leeds defender Gjanni Alioski.
Many have criticised Alioski for going down easily, but while Alioski perhaps should have stayed on his feet – Pepe had no excuses. Now, he will be banned for three domestic matches against Wolves, Tottenham and Burnley.
Pepe has posted a heartfelt message to Arsenal supporters on Instagram, admitting he was completely in the wrong to headbutt Alioski and that he will come back stronger. He remains available for Arsenal’s Europa League matches.
The Gunners travel to Norway ahead of Thursday’s Europa League match against Molde and Pepe could be used, especially as he will be unavailable to face Wolves next weekend. However, Mikel Arteta may leave him out to teach him a lesson.
Xhaka responded, among other former teammates of Pepe’s, showing his leadership. He backed the Gunners winger and stated the Arsenal squad are behind the ex-Lille star – posting in capitals “we are with you”.
