Graham Roberts has responded to a Tottenham Hotspur supporter when asked about Matt Doherty’s poor performance for Spurs during Sunday’s North London derby defeat against Arsenal – and Roberts has given a brutally honest verdict.
Spurs suffered a disappointing defeat to Arsenal despite pre-match hopes of a win, given Jose Mourinho’s side had come into the match in good form. Spurs even took the lead, through one of the goals of the season from Erik Lamela.
But Martin Odegaard and Alexandre Lacazette netted to win the game 2-1 for Arsenal, with Lamela being sent off. Doherty, 29, was chosen at right-back and has started the last three Premier League games – but Arsenal’s best stuff came from his side.
Indeed, the first goal sees Kieran Tierney get the better of Doherty and find Odegaard in the box. Tottenham legend Roberts was asked by a Spurs fan what he thought about the £65,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender – claiming Spurs is too big a club.
TBR’s view – Do Tottenham need another new right-back?
Signed from Wolves only last summer, Doherty has not been the flying right-sided defender that got forward and scored numerous goals – while also proving to be defensively solid. What may have changed, is playing in a back four – instead of a three.
At Wolves, he was given license to get forward, but at Spurs he has limitations. Serge Aurier is inconsistent, Doherty is below what Spurs need. So, if a decent right-back becomes available in the summer, then the North London club need to move.
