Graham Roberts has reacted to reports that Tottenham Hotspur could choose to raid Watford for veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster in the summer – by suggesting that the former England star is renowned for his time-wasting.
Foster, 36, is one of the more experienced goalkeepers in the Premier League and his Watford contract is due to expire in the summer. Indeed, the former Manchester United man has clocked up more than 450 professional appearances.
He also boasts eight England caps and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Telegraph have claimed this week that Spurs are pondering a move for Foster, in order to bring in top-quality cover for Hugo Lloris, despite the presence of Paulo Gazzaniga.
Upon hearing the news that his old side could sign Foster, ex-Tottenham man Roberts stated he would be against the idea – before commenting on Foster’s time-wasting, perhaps in relation to Watford’s two draws with Spurs this season.
TBR’s view – Do Tottenham really need to sign a back-up goalkeeper?
Foster is a top-quality goalkeeper with enormous experience. But do Tottenham need a new goalkeeper to act as cover for Lloris? What Spurs need, if they are to strengthen between the sticks, is a new first-choice goalkeeper.
The north Londoners have been linked with Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana among others, and he would be a top signing if Spurs could lure him to the Premier League. Replacing Lloris with a younger goalkeeper would be the wiser move.
