Graham Roberts has posted on Twitter after Tottenham Hotspur finally agreed a new contract for Toby Alderweireld on Friday morning – which sees the Belgian defender remain at Spurs until the summer of 2023.
Alderweireld, 30, was expected to leave the north London club at the end of the season, along with playmaker Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen. However, that has all changed, with Alderweireld signing a new deal.
It comes after Mauricio Pochettino was replaced by Jose Mourinho as manager. Since the arrival of Mourinho, Alderweireld has starred with much more passionate performances. He has played every single minute of Spurs’ seven games under Mourinho.
Former Tottenham captain Roberts posted on Twitter after hearing of the news Alderweireld had signed a new deal with the north London club, a deal that would see Alderweireld remain at Spurs until he is aged 34.
Alderweireld is arguably Tottenham’s best defender of the decade and has clocked up a whopping 179 appearances in all competitions for the north London club since joining in 2015. Now, he could almost double that tally.
Tottenham and Alderweireld are next in action on Sunday afternoon as they play host to Chelsea, Mourinho’s former team. Spurs will be hopeful of getting a win after four wins in their last five Premier League games.
