Graham Roberts has identified five Tottenham Hotspur players that could have saved Jose Mourinho as Spurs manager, if the Portuguese gaffer had played them regularly – including both Dele Alli and Gareth Bale, who starred on Sunday evening.
Spurs cruised to a 4-0 win over already-relegated Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon and climbed into fifth place with Liverpool’s game against Manchester United postponed due to protests. They remain five points behind Chelsea.
Mourinho was sacked in April after a string of results that had slimmed Tottenham’s chances of a top-four finish. Those chances remain slim as Chelsea continue to impress under Thomas Tuchel. But Roberts has made a big claim on Twitter.
The Spurs legend reckons that if Mourinho had combined Bale, Dele and Toby Alderweireld with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in the Tottenham line-up – then he would not have lost his job when he did. Mason did so, and saw his side win 4-0.
TBR’s view – Are Spurs a better team with Dele and Bale in the side?
It is important not to get carried away as Mason guided his side to a second win in two Premier League games. Sheffield United are already down and when that first goal went in, they folded like a deck of cards with nothing to play for.
Spurs are a much more exciting side, with more attacking prowess, with the likes of Bale and Dele in the side. Against the biggest sides, are they able to be included in the starting line-up? Mason left both Bale and Dele out in the Carabao Cup final.
Giving them freedom sees Spurs beat the worse teams but against the bigger sides, it is somewhat reckless to use them.
