Graham Potter has admitted that he has been hugely impressed by Jose Mourinho this season, and claimed – in comments reported by Sussex Live – that Tottenham Hotspur are as good as anything he has seen so far this season.
Spurs are on a fantastic domestic run. They have not lost in the Premier League since the opening day of the campaign. And only late goals have cost them further victories against both Newcastle and West Ham.
They appear to have largely stepped up a gear this season. They put five past Southampton and scored six against Manchester United.
Brighton are Tottenham’s next opponents. The Seagulls caused Spurs problems last season. They won comfortably at home and took the lead when the two teams met in North London on Boxing Day.
But Potter seemed to suggest that his side cannot afford to be anything other than outstanding if they hope to get a positive result this weekend, as he outlined his admiration for Spurs this term.
“I have been really impressed with them,” he said, as reported by Sussex Live. “I think they are as good as anybody I have seen this year. Really strong, real clarity, really good how they build up, how they attack, how they defend.
“Son and Kane of course but there are other players as well with tremendous quality. Gareth Bale coming back. Again Jose Mourinho is a top coach he is up there with anybody in football ever, in terms of what he has done and what he has achieved, so I have huge respect for him.”
A lot seems to be clicking into place for Mourinho’s men after a mixed first few months at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the Portuguese.
Spurs are playing some sensational football at times. And following Thursday’s defeat in the Europa League, they also have a real point to prove.
