Steven Davis has posted on Instagram after the veteran midfielder was the unlikely opening goalscorer during Sunday’s Scottish Cup match between Celtic and Rangers, netting an overhead kick – and plenty have responded.
Davis, 36, has starred for Rangers since returning to Steven Gerrard’s side from Southampton and is many people’s choice for Player of the Season – along with the likes of Allan McGregor, James Tavernier and Connor Goldson.
He reaffirmed those claims with a brilliant goal. Joe Aribo’s effort looped into the air early on and Davis – who is now Britain’s most-capped player with 126 Northern Ireland caps – scored with a brilliantly-timed bicycle kick.
The former Southampton and Fulham midfielder posted on Instagram after scoring his 24th goal in 305 Rangers games on Sunday – underlining his delight to net against Celtic and knock the Hoops out of the Scottish Cup.
Davis has recently signed a new one-year deal to remain with Rangers for the 2021-22 season – as has fellow Gers veteran Allan McGregor as Gerrard’s men look to defend their Scottish Premiership reign from Celtic next season.
Plenty reacted to the star’s post on social media, including the likes of Kenny Miller, Jordan Jones and even Leeds United star Stuart Dallas – renowned to be a Rangers fan. Rangers players also reacted, as did Graham Dorrans.
Jones described him as a “legend, simple”, while Leon Balogun labelled him: “Mr Standard”.
