Graeme Souness says Tottenham star Harry Kane had a poor World Cup

Graeme Souness has criticised Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane‘s performances for England at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The 29-year-old was brilliant for Spurs leading up to the World Cup. He scored 13 times in 22 appearances in all competitions, which is a great return. Everyone expected Kane to be England’s main man again, but he just didn’t look like his usual self in Qatar.

Graeme Souness says Tottenham star Harry Kane had a poor World Cup

England made it to the quarter-final of the World Cup, where they ended up losing to France.

You can’t be too critical of the Three Lions – they were the better team in that game. However, they just couldn’t get the job done, and Kane’s crucial penalty miss against Les Bleus is what’s on everyone’s mind.

Even without the penalty, Kane didn’t have a great campaign at all. He only scored twice in the whole World Cup, one of which came from the spot.

Souness has had his say on the Tottenham man’s World Cup display. He feels Kane was really poor.

After praising Harry Maguire, the pundit wrote in The Daily Mail: “England’s other Harry, Kane, was not so good in Qatar. I said he had to have a very good tournament for England to win it. He was poor. Was the reason for that the ankle injury he sustained in the 43rd minute in the opener against Iran?

“They made a big mistake by leaving him on the pitch until the 76th minute. They were 3-0 up, get him off! Especially given his history of ankle problems.

“Sometimes, players need protecting from themselves. It’s about the bigger picture, about him being right for future games. But Harry was thinking about goals and the Golden Boot, instead of thinking USA, Wales and beyond. England paid the price.”

Kane will be the first one to admit that he didn’t have a great World Cup.

The Englishman ended the campaign with two goals and three assists in five games, which isn’t a bad return at all, but everyone expected a player of his quality to do so much more.

The World Cup is done now and the focus is back on the Premier League. Tottenham need their main man to step up to finish in the Champions League places again, and there’s every chance he’ll deliver.

Spurs take on Brentford tomorrow in their first game back, and Kane would love nothing more than to find the back of the net.
