Graeme Souness has shared whether he believes that Kevin De Bruyne is better than Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp, as well as a couple of other Premier League greats.
Kevin De Bruyne has undoubtedly been one of the best midfielders the Premier League has had. He has certainly come a very long way since struggling to get opportunities with Chelsea.
Of course, his spell with Wolfsburg put him onto Manchester City’s radar. And the Belgian has gone on to win five Premier League titles, as well as almost every other major honour available to the Cityzens.
Kevin De Bruyne better than Dennis Bergkamp
De Bruyne has now played 250 games in the Premier League, scoring 65 goals and contributing 109 assists. And it cannot be overlooked how he has been the talisman of Pep Guardiola’s star-studded side.

Speaking on Simon & Souness, Graeme Souness was asked whether De Bruyne is better than the likes of Eric Cantona, Dennis Bergkamp and Gianfranco Zola. And he suggested that he would put the Manchester City man ahead of the rest.
“Yeah. You’ve asked me and my immediate thought is yeah,” he said.
“They’re three class acts. But I think he is. If you’re an Arsenal supporter, you’ll disagree. If you’re a Man United supporter, you’ll disagree. No Chelsea supporter is going to agree with me, no Man United supporter is going to agree with me. And no Arsenal supporter’s going to agree with me. But in my opinion, yeah.”
Arsenal fans will definitely take exception with claim
Where Souness is definitely right is that many, many Arsenal fans will disagree with his claim. The likes of Bergkamp, Cantona and Zola helped elevate the Premier League in the early years of the competition.
Bergkamp was certainly viewed as a game-changing signing for Arsenal.
The Non-Flying Dutchman was capable of things on a football pitch which would leave fans of all clubs stunned. And everyone has seen the goals against the likes of Leicester, Newcastle, and against Argentina in 1998 World Cup.
He scored 87 goals and provided 88 assists in 315 Premier League games. Interestingly, that leaves him one goal involvement ahead of De Bruyne – albeit in 65 more appearances. And many will point out that Bergkamp played in a more advanced role.
There is no question however, that plenty of Arsenal fans would have absolutely no interest in entertaining such a debate.
