Graeme Souness believes there is one fixture that could cause his former club Liverpool some problems as they continue their Premier League title charge.
The Reds defeated Chelsea 2-0 last weekend to go back top of the table, after Manchester City had beaten Crystal Palace earlier in the day.
Jurgen Klopp’s team have just four games left to play and the title race looks like it will go down to the wire.
Many believe Liverpool’s hardest run-in game is now out of the way, but Souness has identified a potential banana skin that could derail their title bid.
He said on Sky Sports, quoted by The Metro: “I think, looking at them, the dangerous game for City is the United game. Derby games notoriously hard to predict. And the dangerous game for Liverpool, for me, is Newcastle away.
“The way Rafa sets his team up, you can see he’s quite happy to sit back, absorb the pressure and try and catch them on the break.
“Tactically he’s very, very good and the support up there will be right up for that game, they’ll want to put a spoke in.”
Newcastle are surely now safe from relegation, but will be determined to finish as high up in the league as possible for monetary reasons.
Souness dismissed the upcoming clashes against Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, but the Reds could face a real fight from the Bluebirds who are scrapping for their Premier League lives.
But Newcastle arguably is their trickiest fixture, with Benitez very capable of ruining his old club’s dream.
Liverpool have Wolves on the final day which could be another hard game considering the form of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side against the ‘bigger’ teams this year.
One thing’s for sure, Liverpool are in excellent shape and may never have a better chance to win it.
