Graeme Souness criticised Son Heung-min after Chelsea goal

Graeme Souness has criticised Son Heung-min over the goal Tottenham Hotspur conceded during the first-half of their clash with Chelsea, telling Super Sunday (broadcast on 14/8; 17:25) that the forward has to do more to put off Kalidou Koulibaly.

Antonio Conte’s men needed a dramatic late goal to earn a point on Sunday. Of course, Tottenham had topped the Premier League table after the opening weekend of the campaign.

But they were outplayed during the first-half at Stamford Bridge. They had their bright moments. But Chelsea were certainly the better side. And they were rewarded after 19 minutes with Koulibaly scoring a brilliant goal.

The centre-back was picked out by Marc Cucurella from a corner. And he produced a stunning finish to volley home. But questions will be asked about Tottenham’s defending, with Koulibaly left in plenty of space.

Son was the man closest to the Chelsea summer signing. And Souness was critical of the way the Spurs forward seemed to switch off just before the goal was scored.

“I’d want a word with Son. He thinks he’s done his job once he gets a semi-block on the two trying to run across him,” he told Super Sunday.

“But he’s only a yard away from the guy who strikes the ball at the end of the day. But he’s already on the way out. He’s got to be more aware. A striker defending, he doesn’t really want to be there.”

Souness criticised Son

Son is not the only Tottenham player who needs to take some blame. Spurs did not do well enough to try and stop Koulibaly getting a shot away.

Obviously, the goal will be particularly frustrating. But Tottenham were below-par throughout the first-half.

They did equalise after the break through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Chelsea were able to score another through Reece James. But then, Harry Kane scored in the final moments to earn a point for Tottenham.
