Graeme Souness claims 'sensational' Newcastle star is now better than £100m player

Graeme Souness claims that Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron is now playing better than £100 million man Jack Grealish.

The link between Grealish and Almiron has been much talked about this season after the City midfielder mocked the Paraguayan after winning the Premier League last season.

Since then, Almiron has gone to a completely new level and has been integral in Newcastle’s rise into the top four this season.

In the Mail, Souness said that Almiron has been transformed this season and his performances have been above Grealish’s.

Souness on Almiron and Grealish

He wrote: “Since we’re signing off from 2022, it feels like a good point to recognise some individuals who have stood out. I’ll start with the best manager, and I would have to go for two – Eddie Howe and Mikel Arteta.

“I found Newcastle a very difficult job. It was hard to get everyone singing off the same hymn sheet. It is a big club, but a difficult one to manage. You have to give Eddie 10 out of 10 so far.

Where Howe and Arteta are very similar is the way they improve players. Look at what Eddie has done with Joelinton and Miguel Almiron, the two most improved players in the League. It feels like their twin brothers have turned up. They are unrecognisable.

“Almiron – his goal at Leicester on Boxing Day was sensational. You never would have faulted his effort and enthusiasm, he just did not appear to have any finesse in the final third. He is transformed. Jack Grealish tried to poke fun at Almiron. If you’re buying one of them today, who is it? There’s one answer, and it’s not Jack.”

Almiron has not bitten back at what Grealish said, he just got his head down, focused on his football and has gone up several levels this season.

As Souness says, Howe has to take credit for that too as a coach and then it is down to Almiron, who has transformed himself into one of the most prolific wingers in the league.

The challenge for him is to keep it going now as Newcastle embark on the serious part of the season, where trophies are handed out and their top four credentials will be tested more than ever.
