Grading Liverpool’s 2016/17 signings in their debut seasons at Anfield

Spending nearly £62 million this summer, Liverpool were one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders in the summer transfer window and then did not add to their squad in January. With that in mind, how did their new additions rate in their debut season at Anfield?

Joel Matip (free from Schalke) – 8/10

An inspired signing, when Matip has been fit he has been one of Liverpool’s players of the season. The problem for the Cameroonian has been that he has struggled to maintain his fitness through the season, with an ankle injury keeping him out for much of the middle part of the season.

Loris Karius (£4.7 million from Mainz) – 4/10

Signed presumably with the intention to be the first choice goalkeeper, Karius’ form was not good enough to warrant that billing. Whilst there is still time on the German’s side to develop and improve, the former Manchester City man should be disappointed with how little he has contributed in his first season at the club.

Sadio Mane (£30 million from Southampton) – 9/10

One of the signings of the season anywhere in the Premier League, let alone just at Anfield. Mane made a huge difference to his side and has been instrumental to all of their best attacking play with his pace and drive down the right flank giving countless full-backs nightmares through this season. It was no coincidence that Liverpool’s worst form in January and late in the season coincided with his absences.

Ragnar Klavan (£4.2 million from Augsburg) – 7/10

£4.2 million doesn’t stretch very far in the transfer market at present, so whilst Klavan is far from a quality option, he has been good value for money. Filling in for Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, Klavan has been the ultimate professional and brought experience to what has at times been a very young back four.

Georgino Wijnaldum (£23 million from Newcastle) – 8/10

Rarely given the praise he deserves, the midfielder has been hugely influential from midfield, often doing the hard work and pulling the strings from deep. His goals against the likes of Manchester City and Middlesbrough will be the highlights of his season, but his all round contribution adding defensive elements to his game deserve praise too.
