A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on Emiliano Martinez’s comments to Radio Continental about his desire for more first-team football.
The 27-year-old, who joined Arsenal’s academy in 2010 from Argentinian side Independiente and broke into the first team two years later, has made 37 competitive appearances for the Gunners.
Martinez has excelled in the absence of first-choice Bernd Leno and helped Mikel Arteta’s side win the FA Cup last weekend thanks to a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Wembley.
With Leno now back in training after recovering from the knee injury suffered against Brighton in June, Arteta now has a selection headache for next season in terms of who he picks in goal.
And Martinez has made it clear that he will not settle for an extended place on the bench any longer.
“I showed that I can play, I need to play more games next season,” Martinez told Radio Continental.
“I want to establish myself at Arsenal and become first choice. If I don’t play, I’m going to move, I’m going to go where I play more.”
Considering Martinez has been on the Gunners’ books for a decade and hasn’t even made a half-century of senior appearances, it’s understandable for him to want first-team football.
Quite a few Arsenal fans think so too, though they also acknowledge there’s now a bit of an issue in terms of keeping two high-calibre goalkeepers happy, and there isn’t much desire for Martinez to be shipped out, considering how good he’s been.
Having stepped in superbly and showing that he’s more than capable of doing a great and consistent job in the first team, not to mention his top attitude, to the point that Arteta has deemed him “phenomenal” , the Argentine deserves first-team football – but so does Leno.

We’ve got a problem on our hands here

I was a bit surprised at his confidence in this but then I realised he’s been here for 10 years so he’s making a fair point.

I would keep him at all costs. Much stronger physically than Leno and holds the ball. He is Arsenal through and through as well.

he has every right to demand that, the man’s been here 10 years

But Leno is too good… don’t know how arteta will balance this

Should start ahead of Leno don’t you think? Seems better with his feet, more dominant in the box and nearly as great a shot-stopper as Leno
