Gordon Strachan has told Leeds Live that Marcelo Bielsa will be able to bring in high-profile players to Elland Road if they gain promotion, because of Elland Road and the club’s history.

Leeds are the closest they have been for a very long time in gaining promotion back to the Premier League. They sit in third place, a point behind second-placed Sheffield United and five off of Norwich City.

Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United has left Leeds in third place, despite sitting on top of the pile more than any other side this season. Now, with eight games to play, it is certainly crunch time.

Former Leeds star Strachan is already thinking about a Premier League return for the Whites, and explains how his old side have an advantage in the transfer market over other promoted sides.

“I couldn’t tell you. A lot depends on investment now. It’s huge. Recruitment’s huge in football now, no matter what club you’re at, it’s not so much tactics, it’s recruitment,” Strachan said.

“Leeds can drag people, a lot of players in because of the atmosphere, the stadium, the history. They can do more than most clubs that get promoted.”

TBR’s view

Strachan is bang on. Leeds United’s history, stadium and club stature outweighs the likes of Sheffield United and Norwich. But to believe the club are already promoted is somewhat presumptuous.

Leeds still have some enormously tough games. They take on bitter rivals Millwall after the international break and then travel to Birmingham City – the Blues beat Leeds at Elland Road earlier in the season.

Recruitment will be huge if Leeds get promoted, but fans will be concentrating on whether their side do gain a place in the Premier League before worrying about that.
