The Daily Mirror reported over the weekend that Leeds United are monitoring Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard ahead of the summer in case Marcelo Bielsa’s men do indeed secure promotion to the Premier League.
Up front looks to be one of the areas that Leeds will have to focus on strengthening this summer. And Edouard appears to have a frightening amount of potential.
He scored 28 goals for the Hoops this past season. Meanwhile, his overall record for the club stands at 62 goals in 126 games.
There may be an element of risk attached given that The Sun recently suggested that bidding will start at £25 million.
But perhaps Leeds can take encouragement from some incredibly high praise from Whites hero and former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan earlier this year.
Strachan suggested, in comments reported by the Daily Record, that Edouard reminded him of Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp.
“You look at Edouard for example and you see a player at the top of his game. The way he’s playing right now he reminds me of Dennis Bergkamp with Leigh Griffiths as his Ian Wright,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.
“He certainly look like a far better player with someone else around him.”
It is certainly an exciting statement. But it also highlights how difficult it could prove to be to win the race for Edouard’s signature.
There will surely be a host of clubs wanting to sign Edouard this summer. And Celtic will not make it easy for any admirer to secure his signature.
Leeds meanwhile, will be solely focused on putting themselves in a position during the final five games of the season that may allow them to join the chase to sign Edouard this summer.
