Good chance Lucas Moura will leave Tottenham in January - journalist

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport that there is a good chance that Lucas Moura will leave Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window after he saw a move to Newcastle blocked in the summer.

Lucas has become more of a peripheral figure in Antonio Conte’s squad since the turn of the year. The 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order up front following the arrivals of Dejan Kulusevski and countryman Richarlison.

And his only two appearances so far this term have come at right wing-back, where Conte has three more natural options than the former Paris Saint-Germain star.

Lucas had the opportunity to leave Tottenham in the final stages of the summer window. Reports claimed that both Newcastle and Aston Villa were eyeing a late deal. However, Spurs did not allow him to leave.

‘There was interest’

O’Rourke however, believes that Tottenham may be much more open to his departure in the winter.

“Yes, there’s a real chance that he could possibly leave,” he told Give Me Sport when asked Lucas could go in January.

“Lucas Moura has been a good player for Tottenham in fits and bursts, but he has maybe not been as consistent as he possibly could be for some Tottenham fans.

“There was interest in him later on in the transfer window, with Aston Villa and Newcastle keen on him, but Tottenham blocked those loan moves.”

Tottenham are now in a position where they could probably cope should they let Lucas go. He has been a very good servant, who will forever find himself in Spurs folklore for that Champions League semi-final display.

Jose Mourinho also labelled him ‘amazing‘. And there have certainly been moments for the forward.

However, Spurs have since taken many strides forward. And with that, Lucas may well struggle for any sort of significant game-time should he stay.

So if Tottenham can find a way to offload him in January, it may not be a terrible move. It may be that his departure helps Conte fund moves for more of his own targets in the winter.
