Where has it all gone wrong for Moussa Dembele?
Where has it all gone wrong for?Moussa Dembele? The Belgian international joined Spurs in 2012 but has only scored four times for the White Hart Lane club. Known for excellent dribbling, passing and an unnerving ability to glide past opponents, Dembele is at a career crossroads.?
The twenty-six year old is like a classic car. He needs the right home as well as the right position. He has predominately been played as a defensive anchor in a Spurs shirt which, without a doubt, is not suited to his style of play. The former Fulham midfielder is wasted there. Instead of a limited, holding role, he should have the freedom to express an attacking instinct that is clearly natural rather than manufactured. This should be embraced, not restricted. Dembele is a square peg in a round hole when deployed there. He is an architect, a creator, not a tough-tackling enforcer.?
He shouldn’t play deep, on the wing or centrally. In my opinion, Dembele should be the driving force behind the striker in a 4-4-1-1 formation. Christian Eriksen is a regular on the left, Lennon the right, Paulinho or Sandro patrolling the middle. In a traditional number ten role, Dembele would deliver killer balls for the wingers and forwards by operating in the space between the opposition’s midfield and defence. Here, he would be able to use his speed, power and technical skills to score and create goals. When at Fulham, and employed further up the pitch, Dembele was instrumental in their forward play. ?
Some will argue that he is more effective as a deep-lying playmaker where he can break up attacks and bring the ball forward. There is no doubt that Dembele is effective here, too, but his qualities are not fully utilised in this role. In an advanced position, he will already be in an area where he can directly affect play when he receives the ball. He has the delicate touch and control to be work in such expanses.?
Perhaps it’s just not meant to be. With a serious lack of playing time at Spurs, it may be best for Dembele to move on to pastures new. At the very least he deserves a club that acknowledge his talents.?
