Everton’s timidity in attack may have cost them as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday, but the performance of Andre Gomes was a major positive for Marco Silva.
Gomes’ former manager at Valencia Gary Neville was on commentary for Sky Sports and gave the midfielder a big build up; and he duly delivered.
The classy midfielder showcased his full range of skills despite still being short on match-fitness. He can beat a man, pass with style, create a chance and put his foot in.
He looks very well-equipped indeed to handle the demands of the Premier League; he has that touch of class that not many midfielders outside the top six have.
He arguably does more than some midfielders inside the top six. Yesterday, Gomes was up against Nemanja Matic and Fred and outclassed them both.
Matic cost £40m just last summer but is unable to patrol the area in front of United’s back four with menace anymore; Gomes was able to run the game for large periods.
Gomes showed what he could do in 90 minutes at Old Trafford. Fred cost £47m and we are still waiting to see what he actually offers apart from a bit of energy.
Gomes showed he is a cut above both men, and was even more consistent than Paul Pogba. He was arguably a United-standard midfielder in a blue shirt yesterday.
