‘Going to run riot’ – Celtic fans have high hopes for Leigh Griffiths as striker hits four on his return

Leigh Griffiths scored four times in the pre-season friendly.

Leigh Griffiths stole the headlines as Celtic romped to a 9-1 win over St Gallen U21s. Celtic fielded a team to face St Gallen’s U21 outfit before playing their first-team in the evening.

And it was a comfortable win for the Bhoys, who came racing out of the blocks with several early goals. It was 5-0 within 25 minutes and then it was 5-1 at half-time.

Celtic recovered from conceding on the stroke of the interval by scoring four second-half goals. Griffiths grabbed two in each half as he staked his claim for a first-team spot next season.

Griffiths had to take an enforced break from football last season due to personal reasons. But he is on the road to recovery and he would have caught Neil Lennon’s eye in pre-season.

The Scotland international opened his account after eight minutes, making it 2-0 with a close-range finish. Three minutes later, Griffiths scored a long-range half-volley with his weaker right foot.

Two minutes into the second half, Griffiths had his hat-trick. The 28-year-old hit the top corner to complete his treble. But he was not finished there. Griffiths made it four for him and nine for the team in the 76th minute.

Griffiths continued his fine form in pre-season, having netted in his previous games too. Here are some tweets from Celtic fans reacting to his four-goal performance.
