A number of Aston Villa fans have been commenting on Twitter about their return to Premier League action on Wednesday and Douglas Luiz’s performance was especially lauded.

The Brazilian became Villa’s 10th summer signing following promotion to the top flight when he joined from Manchester City in a deal reported by BBC Sport as costing the Villa Park side £10million.

Although it took a while for Luiz to acclimatise to the Premier League, largely impressing in flashes but also showing inconsistency, he is now one of the first names on Dean Smith’s team sheet and a fan favourite in claret and blue.

The 22-year-old put in a superb display against Sheffield United at Villa Park, anchoring the hosts’ midfield from the start and using the ball well, as well as making a crucial block to deny John Lundstram on 70 minutes.

Here is what some Villa fans said on social media after the stalemate:

The Villans and the Blades reopened the curtain on the 2019-20 Premier League season after 100 days of absence in a game marred by controversy.

Oliver Norwood’s free kick was carried over the line by Orjan Nyland, but it didn’t count as goalline technology cameras failed to spot the ball crossing the line.

Villa are now just one point adrift of safety, with three teams – West Ham, Watford and Bournemouth – occupying 16th to 18th place in the table on 27 points after 29 games played.
