Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho has waxed lyrical about Spurs left-back Ben Davies ahead of their upcoming fixture against the Premier League champions.
The Wales international came close to scoring a wondergoal against Arsenal last time out, rifling a 35-yard shot against the crossbar with the scores level at one-all.
Gunners goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez did just enough to get his fingertips to the ball and nudge it onto the woodwork.
It didn’t matter in the end as Spurs ran out 2-1 winners, Toby Alderweireld netting the winner nine minutes from time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, Davies’ effort and attitude came for praise by Mourinho as Football London asked the Spurs boss whether the 27-year-old has been attempting similar efforts in training ahead of the Liverpool game.
“What a save,” said Mourinho. “I think an amazing save by Martinez, just a little touch. He’s playing so well to be honest and that amazing save, but fantastic strike.
“I have to admit a little bit of a surprise for me. I wouldn’t feel that Ben is this kind of left winger, left wing-back or full-back who strikes the ball so, so, so well.
“What I love in him is that I always know how he’s going to perform. He’s so stable, so compact that I really like to have that feeling.
“He goes forward well and a good crosser of the ball and that shot could have been the goal of his career.”
Since joining Spurs from Swansea for a reported £10million, Davies has been a dependable, solid figure for Mauricio Pochettino and now Jose Mourinho, whose comments on the Welshman’s quality and consistency show just what an asset he is.
With his contract running until the summer of 2024, having penned an extension last year, he’s got plenty more years to give to Spurs, and hopefully there will be more superb attempts towards goal like the one against Arsenal.
