Young Newcastle United goalkeeper Nathan Harker has agreed a loan deal to join Blyth Spartans until January 2020, as per the non-league club’s official website.

Harker went on Newcastle’s pre-season tour after an impressive season at youth level last time out but has left in search of regular gametime, where he will be playing under former Magpies midfielder Lee Clark.

He said: “It’s great to be joining Blyth Spartans. It is a club with a lot of history. Being a local lad myself from Morpeth, I have known the club growing up, so for my first loan to be here is a good feeling.

“It’ll be good to get out on the pitch and get some experience. It’s a big opportunity. I’m hoping to achieve a lot on the pitch while I’m here. It’s a fresh squad and I want to help them push for the highest league position they can.”

Newcastle already have too many goalkeepers on their books so it makes sense for Harker to leave on a temporary basis.

Playing every week for three points is essential for a player’s development – it matters so much more than development football – and working under Clark is a bonus as well.

He’ll be determined to take good care of a player from his old club and understands what it takes for someone to make it at St James’ Park.
