Glenn Hoddle used one word to describe Emerson Royal’s substitute display for Tottenham Hotspur against Marseille – labelling the defender ‘excellent’ on BT Sport.

Royal replaced Ryan Sessegnon at half-time in what was a surprising move by Antonio Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini.

Conte was serving a one-match ban due to his outburst after Harry Kane’s goal was controversially ruled out by VAR last week. The Italian was forced to watch on from the stands as his side secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Marseille.

After a poor first-half display, Spurs headed into the break 1-0 down after Chancel Mbemba’s powerful header beat Hugo Lloris.

Heung-Min Son had already been forced off after suffering a blow to the head. And in an attempt to swing the game back in Spurs’ favour, Stellini surprisingly turned to Royal.

The Brazilian put in an assured display from the wing-back role and Hoddle praised him on BT Sport last night.

In the 93rd minute of the game, Royal won an important header to stop Marseille switching the ball out to the left-hand side.

And the moment prompted BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher to praise Royal for his display after coming off the bench.

He said: “Emerson Royal, who’s had a really good second-half out there.”

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle agreed and used one word to describe the wing-back’s display.

“He has. He’s been excellent hasn’t he.” he said.

Royal has come under plenty of criticism this season as he’s put in some very mixed performances for Spurs.

But the 23-year-old certainly helped Tottenham keep the ball more effectively last night while doing his job on the defensive side.

Spurs battled away in France last night and scored two goals in the second-half to see them through to the last-16 of the Champions League.

Clement Lenglet’s composed header got Conte’s men back on level terms and Pierre-Emile Hobjerg sealed a dramatic win with the last kick of the game.
