Glenn Hoddle thinks Tottenham need to replace player in summer, suggests potential signing

Glenn Hoddle has told his Footy Podcast that Tottenham Hotspur need to replace Hugo Lloris but instead of bringing Joe Hart to the fore, the Spurs icon feels his old club need to bring in a new signing – and has suggested an English goalkeeper.

Lloris, 34, has managed to keep just eight clean sheets in 29 league and cup appearances this season – conceding eight goals in his last two matches following a 5-4 FA Cup loss to Everton, and then a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

On Saturday, Lloris probably should have done better with Rodri’s penalty and certainly should have stopped Ilkay Gundogan’s first goal, allowing a left-footed poke to go underneath him. His form has simply not been good enough for Jose Mourinho.

The Sun claim Mauricio Pochettino is looking at £7million (Sun) Spurs signing Lloris for his PSG side, and that has seen the club identify West Brom’s Sam Johnstone as a potential replacement – and Hoddle has suggested he would be a good addition.

“I’m not sure Spurs could drop him, I don’t think Joe Hart is ready to play back-to-back games. He hasn’t been safe for four or five months. Spurs, long-term, will need to replace Lloris – quite soon. He is on the back foo,” Hoddle said.

“He looks as if he’s doubting himself. Sam Johnstone at West Brom is a top goalkeeper, he will get better and better. If West Brom go down or stay up, he is somebody will stay in the Premier League – and someone will grab him.”

TBR’s view – Johnstone is good, but is he Tottenham standard?

Clearly, Johnstone is a top goalkeeper and deserves to be in the Premier League. He has shown he is above West Brom, and a summer move could be on the cards – regardless as to whether Sam Allardyce keeps the Baggies up or not.

But is he Tottenham standard? A good shot-stopper, the ex-Manchester United man is probably not as good as Mourinho would want him to be with his feet. But he knows Johnstone from his time as manager at Old Trafford.

A decent option, but Spurs need to look at other options first.
