Glenn Hoddle thinks Spurs 21-year-old could thrive under Antonio Conte

Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has waxed lyrical about Spurs midfielder Oliver Skipp following his display last night.

Antonio Conte’s charges returned to winning ways following their Conference League loss last time out by beating Brentford 2-0.

Spurs were much improved and made their victory look almost routine as Son Heung-min forced an own goal and then scored the second.

Skipp played the full 90 minutes for Tottenham and delivered an impressive box-to-box display, snapping into tackles and driving the ball forward.

Indeed, the 21-year-old could’ve even had an assist as he provided a superbly-weighted through-ball for Harry Kane.

Skipp is currently in his first season with the Spurs senior team following last term’s successful loan at Norwich.

Former Tottenham managers Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho both sung the youngster’s praises in the past.

And Antonio Conte is also confident that Skipp “could become a top midfielder in future”, though the Italian feels he’s still a work in progress.

Hoddle thinks Skipp played “his best game” for Spurs against the Bees and feels he’s getting “clarity” from Conte, suggesting he could thrive under the new boss.

“Oliver Skipp – I thought it was his best game he has played for Tottenham,” the Daily Mail quotes Hoddle as saying.

“There are times when he is a little frustrating, where he looks square and backwards.

“But he is growing into the game, straight away when he is in possession of the ball he is looking forwards, he is getting more confident on the ball, progressive.

“If he can keep doing that consistently then he will be the player that people were speaking to me about a few years back.

“That is the standard he has set himself, now he has got to maintain that. At 21 you don’t know your game yet.

“He is going to get progression and I think Conte knows what he wants from him.

“I think Oliver Skipp is getting clarity from his manager about what he wants him to do on the pitch.”
