Glenn Hoddle has told his podcast that Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse would be a “major asset” should Tottenham Hotspur decide to bring the set-piece specialist to north London – and that he would improve a team like Everton, too.

Ward-Prowse, 26, has scored four goals and created three more in his 15 Premier League appearances for the Saints this season. The midfielder has broken into England’s side on a regular basis – looking as though he is a front runner for a place at Euro 2021.

In an exciting Southampton side, Ward-Prowse has shone. He is just six matches shy of playing 300 games for Southampton, but his form is likely to tempt some of England’s biggest clubs with the January transfer window approaching.

Ex-Tottenham manager and player Hoddle thinks Ward-Prowse would be a great signing for Tottenham and become a “major” player for Jose Mourinho’s side. He also thinks Ward-Prowse would instantly improve Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton.

“I think his all round game has come on leaps and bounds, but as a set piece artist there is no-one better,” Hoddle said. “He’d be a major asset for Tottenham, for instance. Or he could go and play in Everton’s team tomorrow.

“Whether he has the mentality, you don’t know until he goes to a big club. But he’s been in and around the England squad and I think he’s growing as a player,” Hoddle continued, when discussing the midfielder.

TBR’s view – Ward-Prowse a stunning signing for any English side

He would improve any English team. Enormous Premier League experience, unparalled ability from corners, free-kicks and long-range shooting, and leadership – Ward-Prowse would be an excellent addition for any Premier League team.

There has been no links to Tottenham or Everton – but would he even leave Southampton for those sides? Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg did so, and a move to Spurs is likely to more attractive than Everton. It is unclear how much he would cost.

But there is no doubt that Hoddle is right – he would be a stunning addition for either Spurs or Everton.
