Glenn Hoddle suggests Steven Gerrard for Spurs job
Glenn Hoddle has told BT Sport (broadcast on 8/5; 11:55) that he would include Steven Gerrard as a contender for the Tottenham Hotspur job as Spurs continue their search for Jose Mourinho’s successor.
Tottenham are still yet to announce who will replace the Portuguese. And in truth, from the outside, it does not appear that they may be much closer to making an appointment.
Meanwhile, there has been talk about a raft of other names. Graham Potter is someone who has won admirers for the work he has done with Brighton, as well as at Swansea before that.
Hoddle suggested that he would be happy with either man, but he went on to claim that he would like to see the Rangers boss in the mix.
“Brendan Rodgers would do a great job, but why would he leave Leicester at the moment? I think Graham Potter is one that with a bigger club, a different group of players, possibly would be good,” he told BT Sport.
“Steven Gerrard, I’ll put his name in there. I don’t know if Steven can wait for Klopp to start hitting the ropes in a few years time to go to Liverpool. It doesn’t work like that sometimes.”
Gerrard has done an outstanding job at Ibrox. They have won the Scottish Premiership title at a canter this season. And they enjoyed another impressive run in the Europa League.
His managerial career is still in its infancy. But there is no question that he is a huge name. And his time with Rangers shows that he is not overawed working with a massive club.
His doubters will argue that he has a lot more to prove. But to play down what he has done with the Gers would be extremely unfair.
And there are now only a handful of Premier League sides that could realistically hope to stand a chance of luring him away from Rangers.
Hoddle is seemingly hoping that Spurs decide to try their luck.
