Glenn Hoddle says Kulusevski needs to start for Spurs vs Manchester City
Glenn Hoddle has told BT Sport (broadcast on 7/9; 22:10) that Dejan Kulusevski needs to start for Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester City this weekend, while he also hinted that Richarlison may get the nod ahead of Son Heung-min.
Son’s struggles continue. The South Korean is yet to open his account this season. You could see how desperate he was to score as he tried to carry on after being wiped out by the challenge which saw Chancel Mbemba sent off during their Champions League opener with Marseille on Wednesday.
Richarlison meanwhile, proved to be Spurs’ hero against the Ligue 1 side. The Brazilian scored two late headers to ensure that Antonio Conte’s men got the three points.
And with that, some Tottenham fans may now be wondering whether the 25-year-old should start ahead of Son on Saturday when they face the champions.
Hoddle was asked whether Richarlison has put himself in contention to start. And, while he avoided naming a complete front three, he did hint that Conte needed to make at least one change for the clash with City.
“Kulusevski, for me, needs to play against Man City,” he told BT Sport. “The big question is, Son wasn’t at his best again tonight. He needs a goal, once he gets a goal, he’ll be fine. He might even look to put Richarlison on that left-hand side.”
Kulusevski needs to start
It would have been unthinkable before the season started to imagine Son not starting against Manchester City if available. But Conte is arguably now taking a gamble picking him.
Richarlison will have no problem getting himself up for the game. Meanwhile, Kulusevski has been one of the best players in the Premier League since his arrival in January.
It would come as no surprise at all if Son made the decisive impact if he got another chance on Saturday. But if Conte is picking his side on form, then the front three will surely consist of Harry Kane, Richarlison and Kulusevski.
