Tottenham lost again on Thursday evening as they were beaten 1-0 at Stamford Bridge courtesy of a header from Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez scored a brilliant header for Chelsea, but the Argentine should’ve been marked more closely as he made a late dart into the box.
Micky van de Ven was the man tasked with marking Fernandez, but, unfortunately, the Dutchman was caught ball watching.
Van de Ven has earned plenty of praise at Tottenham in recent times, but, on this occasion, he didn’t do his job properly.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Glenn Hoddle has been reviewing Van de Ven’s performance here, and he says that he’s noticed a problem wih the defender, claiming that he’s too attracted to the ball.

Glenn Hoddle spots Micky van de Ven problem
Hoddle shared his verdict on Van de Ven’s showing against Chelsea and his mistake for the goal.
The pundit says that Van de Ven does have a problem in his game in that he’s too attracted to the ball, claiming that his awareness of who he’s marking is sometimes lacking.
“His problem is like any defender Tim, he’s attracted to the ball. I used to say to any defender when it’s acute to you and the ball is in front of you, once the cross is coming in, if you look at the ball for more than two seconds without looking over your shoulder and having a little glance. He’s looked at the ball, looked at the ball and looked at the ball, he doesn’t have a clue where the attacker is,” Hoddle said.
Micky van de Ven’s aerial stats
Van de Ven does a lot of good things at Tottenham.
Van de Ven’s pace is a key aspect of Tottenham’s approach to any game as he allows Spurs to play a high line.
However, as Hoddle says, Van de Ven does seem to have trouble when it comes to dealing with crosses and balls in the air, and the stats show it.
Indeed, despite standing at 6ft 4, Van de Ven’s aerial stats leave a lot to be desired.
| Season | Aerial duels won | Aerial duels loss | Aerial duel win percentage |
| 2023/24 | 38 | 41 | 48% |
| 2024/25 | 18 | 16 | 53% |
The Dutchman has a glaring weakness in his game – he’s not good in the air, and that’s something he seriously does need to work on if he wants to take his game to the next level.
