Glenn Hoddle responds when asked if Tottenham should sell Tanguy Ndombele

Glenn Hoddle has responded on his podcast when asked whether Tottenham Hotspur should look to cash in on Tanguy Ndombele this summer, after the French midfielder was left on the substitutes bench against Sheffield United on Sunday.

Ndombele, 24, has endured a tumultuous couple of seasons at Spurs. A club-record signing from Lyon initially under Mauricio Pochettino, he started well but eventually that form dissipated and Pochettino was sacked – and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

As shown in the Amazon Prime documentary, his attitude and form under Mourinho was initially questioned but that changed during the first half of this season – starring alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. However, with Mason, he has started just once.

On Sunday, he was an unused substitute as Spurs cruised to a 4-0 win over Sheffield United and asked if he should be sold this summer – Hoddle responded by stating he should be kept but only as a squad player, labelling him a “playground player”.

“He takes too many touches, slows the game down,” Hoddle said. “I like him, he can do unbelievable things on a football pitch. He is nowhere near as good as Eriksen. He should not be more than a squad player – that is how good Spurs have got to be.

“I wouldn’t sell him, but I’d have him playing quicker, he holds on to it for too long. He has got some talent, almost raw talent. Sometimes I think, there’s something there and other times I think – he’s a playground player. A world beater, like his goal against Sheffield United, but then he will let you down. He needs to understand the game a bit more,” Hoddle said.

TBR’s view – Ndombele has been given chance after chance

But it could be a case in which he needs to feel like he’s one of the club’s best players in order for him to shine. At Lyon, at his best, he was easily their best player. But at Spurs, the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and others are much better.

He has been given chances. His first season did not go to plan and despite resurgent form during the first half of the season, he has tailed off and Gio Lo Celso has impressed since coming back in. It might be best for Spurs to find a buyer for Ndombele.
