Glenn Hoddle has responded when asked if Tottenham Hotspur should sack Jose Mourinho on his Footy podcast, following Sunday’s defeat to West Ham United – and backed the Portuguese gaffer, claiming he deserves time.

Spurs suffered another Premier League defeat on Sunday afternoon, losing 2-1 to London rivals West Ham as goals from Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard cancelled out Lucas Moura’s header – despite an improved second 45.

The introduction of Gareth Bale turned the tide and Spurs hit the woodwork as they looked to come back from 2-1 down. But ultimately, they failed to do so, and now sit in ninth place in the Premier League – nine off the top four.

They have won just two of their last eight league and cup outings, suffering five defeats in that time but Hoddle responded to the question by stating Mourinho deserves time – given they are in a cup final, and the manager’s past.

“No I don’t [think he should be sacked],” Hoddle said. “There have been a lot of calls from fans, West Ham are flying at the moment – they have a good balance. They are a very, very solid side.

“How can you sack someone who has got you to a cup final? It’s ridiculous. He has earned the right, with what he has done in his career, to be given more time. Average at times, but a couple of wins; the confidence comes back.”

TBR’s view – Mourinho deserves at least until the end of the season

That will have seen him remain in the hotseat for 18 months. But sacking him now would not only be enormously expensive for Spurs, but also be pointless considering they have an identity – one that would have to be changed.

The issue with Mourinho is that when things are not going his way, they are criticised more than other out-of-form teams because his side are so defensive-minded. That has changed in recent weeks, giving more freedom in attack.

Spurs are playing well. They should have scored more against West Ham and dominated from start to finish. But two defensive mistakes has seen them suffer – a similar story so far throughout. Solve that issue, and Spurs will thrive.
