Glenn Hoddle names the team that could tempt Marcelo Bielsa away from Leeds
Glenn Hoddle has told BT Sport’s coverage of Leeds United’s 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion that if Barcelona come calling for Marcelo Bielsa – then the Argentine might be tempted to leave Elland Road in the coming weeks.
Bielsa, 65, is out of contract at the end of June but to those that know the Argentine – they know that he likes to sign a one-year deal every summer. It is how we works, and how he has always worked since taking over at Elland Road.
But it does cause speculation surrounding his future, and Hoddle has been at the forefront of that. The ex-England gaffer recently spoke of how Tottenham should be looking at Bielsa – and has now hinted at an exit again.
Despite CEO Angus Kinnear stating in his programme notes that Bielsa and Victor Orta had been planning since the turn of the year for 2021-22 – Hoddle suggested that if Barcelona come calling, the Argentine could depart.
“This is a great team. If the manager stays, he still hasn’t signed that contract,” Hoddle questioned on BT Sport. “What happens if Barcelona come in for him at the last minute? What’s he going to do?”
TBR’s view – Hoddle is right to some degree
If Barcelona come calling, it will be near-impossible to turn down for Bielsa – a manager that is idolised by Lionel Messi. Both are legends of Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys and of course, Bielsa has previously managed Argentina.
But Hoddle is incorrect to question Bielsa’s future, despite his contract. Bielsa simply works on a year-to-year, rolling 12-month contract. He has already stated numerous times he will put pen to paper at Elland Road.
Barcelona would probably tempt Bielsa, but he is expected to sign on again for another season – at least.
