Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has named former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger as the best manager he’s ever played under.

Glenn Hoddle, who racked up a total of 405 appearances for Tottenham, played under Arsene Wenger at Monaco between 1987 and 1991.

The Spurs legend left north London after scooping a UEFA Cup with Arsenal’s bitter rivals.

Of course, Wenger eventually joined the Gunners in 1996 after a spell in Japan and it’s fair to say he made a huge impact on the Premier League during the early years of his tenure.

The Frenchman scooped three league titles and seven FA Cups during his spell at Arsenal.

And despite Hoddle’s allegiance to Spurs, he’s named Wenger as the best manager he’s ever worked with.

Speaking on Football’s Greatest, Hoddle was joined by host Jeff Stelling, who quizzed the Tottenham legend on the best manager he’s ever played under.

Hoddle named Wenger and admitted he knew what was coming at Arsenal after the Frenchman arrived at Highbury.

“I’ve got to say Arsene. I think Arsene Wenger, for me, he was ahead and I think they were in France and abroad, to be honest, on so many different angles,” Hoddle said.

“It made you think that you were complete football. It was about mind, body, looking after yourself – the warm-downs, the stretching. Everything!

“See, I had a taste of that before over there [at Monaco] so when he went to Arsenal, I knew what was going to happen and I looked at a few of the players and thought ‘Good luck with that one Arsene’.

“But they listened and learned and then they went on and done what they did. So, fair dos to them players. Arsene was excellent.”

This is unlikely to go down well with Tottenham supporters but Wenger’s impact at Arsenal and in the Premier League is undeniable.

While his 22-year tenure in north London didn’t exactly end on the best terms, he remains Arsenal’s best manager of the modern era.

His achievement of going a full Premier League season without tasting defeat remains unmatched and his modern methods certainly changed the landscape in English football.
