Tottenham Hotspur will seemingly have the backing of club legend Glenn Hoddle should they make a move for Sam Johnstone, judging by the former Spurs’ star comments on the goalkeeper to the London Evening Standard.
The Sun reported at the start of the month that Johnstone was on Jose Mourinho’s radar. It was claimed that Tottenham are wary of losing Hugo Lloris to Paris Saint-Germain in the future.

And it was suggested that the West Brom star could be targeted if Lloris does leave at any stage.
Johnstone has enjoyed a fantastic season, despite the Baggies’ struggles. He has produced some colossal performances and made some world-class saves along the way.

And when picking out one player to watch this week, Hoddle suggested that he could see the 27-year-old joining one of the league’s best sides.
“I really like Sam Johnstone, the goalkeeper at West Brom,” he told the London Evening Standard. “I think he is ready for one of the top six clubs to go and get him. I have seen him four times this year and he has been outstanding.
“If West Brom can get out of the hole they are in, he could be the one to save them.”
TBR View: Johnstone must be a contender if any top six side needs a goalkeeper
It must be noted that Hoddle’s comments do not appear to have been inspired by the links. But it would certainly appear that he would be happy to see the goalkeeper at Tottenham.
It is a big claim to back Johnstone – who earns £32,500-a-week, according to Spotrac – for one of the top six. But there is no question that the stopper has been a rare shining light for the Baggies so far this season.
And if any of the bigger clubs – including Spurs – do need a goalkeeper over the next few months, Johnstone will surely be one name that is considered at the very least.
