Glenn Hoddle lauds Leeds star Kalvin Phillips

Glenn Hoddle has told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel that he loves Kalvin Phillips and suggested that he would be happy to see the Leeds United star play alongside Declan Rice for England this summer.

Phillips has enjoyed another remarkable campaign. Leeds have established themselves as one of the most exciting sides in the Premier League in their first year back in the top flight.

And the 25-year-old has been at the heart of their success. He has stepped up his game following an outstanding time in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa.

Phillips has also made his England debut this season. And he looks to be a serious contender to go to the European Championships this summer.

Jordan Henderson’s fitness may have a major impact on whether he starts or not. But Hoddle suggested that he has absolutely no concerns about Phillips playing alongside Rice as he is a big fan of the Leeds star.

“I love him,” he told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel. “What you said about Rice becoming a better passer forward, this kid’s already got it.

“So that balance would be interesting to me, I wouldn’t mind playing both of them in there. I’d be happy with it. If Henderson isn’t fit, and let’s hope he is, I think that wouldn’t be a bad balance.

“He’s brave in his passing. If he sees it, he’ll hit it.”

Of course, Phillips vindicated Hoddle’s comments about his passing in incredible fashion at the weekend. The academy graduate played the most outrageous ball out to Jack Harrison in the build-up to Leeds’s fourth goal at Burnley.

Bielsa’s men have had real problems whenever they have been without Phillips throughout the Argentinian’s tenure.

Admittedly, Robin Koch was superb against Spurs the previous weekend. But Leeds seem to be a much better side when they can call upon Phillips.

And Hoddle clearly thinks that England will also be better off with him in the side this summer.
